Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH, also known as Forestier's disease and ankylosing hyperostosis) is a non-inflammatory spondyloarthropathy. It is characterized by spiny ankylosis and ossification of spinal ligaments and entheses. Involvement is variable, but can involve the entire spine. The disc spaces and facet joints remain unaffected. Classically, advanced disease may have "melted candle wax" appearance along the spine on radiographic studies.
The calcification and ossification is most common on the right side of the spine. In people with dextrocardia and situs inversus this calcification occurs on the left side, which confirms the role of the descending thoracic aorta in preventing the physical manifestations of DISH on one side of the spine
In layman's terms keeping and explaining as simple as possible the affects of D.I.S.H are that it causes soft tissue such as ligaments and tendons to turn into bone and your bones fuse together, hence the dripping candle effect of the spine.

What Is D.I.S.H ? The first signs of dish may be a bad back or aches and pains in various parts of the body. I was told by the DR you have probably strained yourself or you are just getting old it is to be expected. I was then told after a few years you have Fibromyalgia, so I was treated for that for a couple of years, a new Dr sent me for tests thinking I may have Parkinson's disease but I was diagnosed with D.I.S.H. The information about D.I.S.H. you see on web can be misleading, I have constant extreme pain, very stiff joints with limited mobility, cant rest or get comfy, I have to keep moving otherwise I seize up so going to bed can become a chore as it extremely hard to get a good nights sleep. D.I.S.H can also effect other areas of your body from your feet right up to your neck which can lead to some serious complications
I hope this small amount of information is of help to keep you positive.
The important thing is if you know something is wrong badger your G.P until you get a proper diagnosis.
All the best Steve
